Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Screening

PADPAD, often called poor circulation in the legs, is a serious condition that more than doubles the risk of having a stroke and quadruples the risk of dying from a heart attack. Simply put, it’s a problem with blood flow in the arteries of the legs. Plaque - made up of cholesterol and other materials - builds up on the walls of the arteries, restricting blood flow down the legs and into the feet.

The trouble is, most people don’t have any symptoms. In fact, only about 1/3 feel any pain or discomfort. By the time you actually feel pain in your legs, the arteries in your legs may be over 60% blocked.

The Ankle/Brachial index (ABI) test is a simple, painless, and non-invasive way to determine whether or not you may have PAD. It’s as simple as taking your blood pressure. A total of four (both arms and ankles) systolic blood pressures are obtained using a hand held Doppler probe. The pressures in your ankles are compared to the pressures in your arms and an ankle/brachial index is then calculated.
